Gareth Murray Stays in the BBL, Re-joins Cheshire

Great Britain Senior Men’s Gareth Murray has joined Cheshire Phoenix for the coming season having previously played for the BBL side in 2010-11.

Murray had been seeking a move to Europe but will remain in the BBL for another season after once again switching Glasgow for Cheshire. The soon-to-be 30-year-old has spent eight seasons with the Rocks since making his debut in 2005 but is yet to win any silverware having been a runner-up on six different occasions.

“Gareth has always been a fierce competitor, as we saw for ourselves last season,” said ‘Nix chairman Andrew Donaldson. “His determination and desire coupled with his ability will only add quality to our exciting squad for this season.”

The 6’7″ forward represented the GB senior side for the second consecutive summer and made it into Joe Prunty’s final 12 for the EuroBasket 2015 qualifiers against Bosnia and Iceland. Last season, Murray averaged 12.5 points per game in 33 league appearances as Glasgow missed out on the play-offs.

The Scot joins fellow GB team-mate Devan Bailey at the Northgate this season while Cheshire were forced into another change with Rod Wilmont’s replacement Renaldo Major also needing to be replaced after picking up a foot injury. Former Duke prospect Taylor King has been drafted in as the third and final import.
