England U16s Fall to Hungary Defeat in Final Game Before Euros

England under-16’s fell to an 86-74 defeat against Hungary on Thursday in their final preparation game before the European Championships next week.

Alan Keane’s side won the series opener 72-70 on Wednesday but saw their winning run ended in the second game.

“This trip has been the perfect preparation leading into next week,” Keane said. “We are excited to start the Euros and leave (Hungary) with an eagerness and a warrior mindset ahead of our opening game.”

Nelson Boachie-Yiadom top scored with 17 points while Luke Mitchell added 15 having led the team in the opening game. Sam Japhet-Mathias also added 13 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

Hungary got off to a strong start and opened up a double digit lead at the end of the first as they held a 30-19 advantage. The visitors battled back in the second and managed to reduce the deficit to seven going into the half-time break trailing 44-37.

Another tight finish looked on the cards as England edged a close fought third quarter to go into the final quarter, 62-56 behind. However, they could only get within four points as Hungary regained their early control with some clinical shooting from beyond the arc.

England fly out to Macedonia on Monday as they prepare for their Division B campaign opener against Scotland next Wednesday. The final 12-man roster is still to be confirmed.
