Lawson Clutch as GB U20s Win Division A Debut vs Latvia

The GB U20s were victorious in their Division A European Championships debut, defeating Latvia 64-62 in Crete on Tuesday night.

Ben Lawson, who finished with 12 points, hit two game winning free throws with 10 seconds remaining, and then poked the ball from the Latvians to Luke Nelson on the final possession to secure the victory.

“Latvia tried to go one-on-one with Kavell Bigby-Williams,” said GB Head Coach Doug Leichner of the final play.

“Ben Lawson poked the ball out of Zvigurs’ grasp and both teams pounced on the ball. It was a like a rugby scrum and Luke Nelson came away with it. It’s a good win and shows how the players can come through adversity.”

Alex Young led the team in scoring in his official GB debut, finishing with 17 points. Luke Nelson contributed 13 and Elliott Sentance added 8.

There is little time for rest for GB as they face Hungary in the late game on Wednesday (1915 BST).

Box score.
