Mersey Tigers BBL Franchise Withdrawn

The Mersey Tigers have been kicked out of the British Basketball League after having their franchise withdrawn last week.

Little information was shared by the league explaining the reasons, with just a one sentence statement appended to the end of an article reading “Following a review, the Mersey Tigers have had their franchise withdrawn.”

The Tigers finished the 2012-13 season with a winless record, becoming the first team in league history to go without a single victory. It marks a rapid fall from grace, being only two years since Mersey were BBL treble winners.

In a statement released on their website upon hearing the news, the Tigers said:

“We were disappointed that the BBL today announced the withdrawal of the Mersey Tigers franchise.

“We would like to thank our fans for standing by us and hope you understand that, whilst we are in the process of reviewing our options, we will not be making any further comment.”

It means the league will remain at 12 teams for next season, with newcomers Birmingham Knights joining the professional ranks, whilst Edinburgh and Bristol are set to join in 2014.
