HUTCHINSON CALLS TIME AFTER HATTERS WIN

Lisa Hutchinson brought down the curtain on her glittering career with one last prize, helping Sheffield Hatters to the EBL play-off title.

The Yorkshire side took revenge for giving up their league crown by beating UWIC 93-72 in the final in Manchester.

However Hutchinson, a winner of every domestic piece of silverware during her decade with the Hatters, confirmed this would be the end of the line.

The guard was a stalwart for GB when the national team programme was revived in 2006, bouncing back from the disappointment of missing out on selection for England at that year’s Commonwealth Games,to make her GB debut against Norway the following summer

She won 47 caps for GB but her failure to make the roster for last year’s EuroBasket Women – and exclusion from the Olympic squad – has led her to call time.

“Basketball has basically been my life for the last 17 years,” she said.

“I’ve had some fantastic times, travelled throughout Europe and met some amazing people. Best memories are playing for GB in the European championships and getting MVP in the national cup and playoff finals.

“But I’m retiring now as I’ve missed my chance for the Olympics and that is what I was always working towards. It is a massive commitment to play basketball but I’m married now and want to start the next chapter in my life. I’m sure I will miss playing but I have many great memories to take with me.”
