GB guard Andrew Lawrence scored a career-high 32 points, but his Charleston team suffered a heartbreaking 99-98 double overtime defeat to Elon.
Lawrence, incredibly, played all 50 minutes of the Cougars, and shot 10-16 from the field, including 5-9 on three-pointers. He also had eight assists, two steals and two blocks.
The London-born guard scored the layup which sent the game into overtime, and hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds to go in the second overtime to pull Charleston to within a point. Lawrence then had a chance to win the game at the end but his jumper was blocked by an Elon defender.
Charleston won their other two games this week behind stellar performances from Lawrence. The junior had 11 points and eight assists with no turnovers against Samford, and led the Cougars with 24 points, seven assists and three steals against Appalachian State.
Alasdair Fraser also had a monster game this week, putting up 21 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and a career-high four assists as his Maine team beat UMBC in overtime. In an encouraging sign for a player who has fouled out six times this season, Fraser was able to stay on the floor for 39 of the game’s 45 minutes.
Ashley Hamilton’s Loyola Marymount won two more games this week to hold their place at the top end of the tough West Coast Conference. Hamilton had five points and nine rebounds against Pepperdine, and 13 points and three rebounds against San Francisco.
Ovie Soko had a great all-around game on Thursday as he posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double with two assists, two blocks and two steals. He also filled up the boxscore on Saturday with seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals but only scored four points on 2-9 shooting.
Ben Mockford dropped 21 points on Bryant on Saturday, making eight of his 17 shots and five of eleven from downtown. Earlier in the week, he had 14 points on 4-13 shooting against Central Connecticut State. St Francis won both the games, putting them in second place in the Northeast Conference.
Shane Walker had a strong week after some disappointing recent performances, recording a season-high 12 rebounds against Rider, along with seven points, three assists and two blocks. Walker followed that up with 14 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals against St Peter’s. Victories in both games means Loyola Maryland are tied for first place in the conference with an 11-2 record.
Will Neighbour had six points, three assists and three rebounds in 23 minutes as his UALR team defeated Louisiana-Monroe. The Trojans currently top the Sun Belt conference with an 8-2 record, putting Neighbour in line for an NCAA Tournament appearance if his team’s form continues.
Alex Marcotullio’s Northwestern got a couple of wins to keep their own faint tournament hopes alive. Marcotullio started both games, contributing seven points and two assists against Nebraska, and two points and a career-high seven rebounds against Illinois.
Aaron Geramipoor played a career-high 23 minutes on Saturday, but it wasn’t a happy day for him as Seton Hall lost their seventh straight game, to Connecticut. Geramipoor contributed four points and two rebounds.
