Page & Van Oostrum Honoured by British Baskeball

Julie Page Devon van Oostrum Awards
Great Britain Women’s player Julie Page has been named as British Basketball’s Player of the Year 2011, with Devon van Oostrum recognised as the Emerging Athlete of the Year 2011, the first recipient of the new category.

Page was awarded the title following a stand out summer leading the GB women to the second round stage in EuroBasket 2011, averaging 10 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.

The power forward was extremely proud with the honour, which means she also wins the Olympic Athlete of the Year Award for basketball:

“I am honoured and immensely proud to have been named the British Basketball Player of the Year 2011. Just to be considered alongside so many talented and accomplished players is extremely humbling, but to actually win the award is a tremendous privilege.

“This year has been an incredible ride for both me personally and the Standard Life GB women’s team. I would like to extend my gratitude and eternal thanks to everyone who has believed in and supported me throughout my career.”

The Emerging Athlete of the Year 2011 is another award to add to Devon van Oostrum’s résumé. The summer saw the 6’3″ point guard make his debut for the GB senior men’s team following a stand out performance with the GB under-20 men where he averaged 13 points, seven rebounds and a tournament-high five assists per game at the Division B U20 European Championships.

The 18 year old is one of Great Britain’s brightest young talents, currently playing his basketball with Tarragona in Spain.

Devon was delighted with the award:

“I am so happy to have been awarded this title, especially since it was my first official outing with the GB senior men’s side.

“The under-20 and senior games were a great chance to play with older and more experienced players. I learnt a lot from them and also made some new friends along the way. Without their help I wouldn’t have won this award.”

British Basketball Performance Director, Chris Spice added:

“Both Julie and Devon have had great seasons for GB this summer and I congratulate them on their awards. They also both know the value of hard work and determination and we hope they will continue to improve and become major players in our Olympic campaign next year.”
