NCAA: LAWRENCE DOES THE CHARLESTON
GB guard Andrew Lawrence led his College of Charleston team to another big win this week, as they knocked off Tennessee.
Charleston, who play in the middle-ranking Southern Conference, had already defeated Clemson of the ACC earlier in the year and claimed their second major-conference scalp as they beat the Volunteers 71-65.
The Cougars led by 14 with six minutes to go before Tennessee made a late run. Lawrence did a good job knocking down his free throws to maintain Charleston’s lead, before stealing the ball on the Vols’ final possession to seal the victory. It was the Londoner’s fifth steal of the game – he also had 14 points and four assists in a turnover-free performance.
Charleston then moved to 9-1 with a victory over local rival Charleston Southern. Lawrence had 14 points, five assists and a career-high four blocks in that win.
Ben Mockford had a big night last Monday, capping a career-high 24 points with a game-winning three as St Francis defeated Howard 73-71. The sophomore guard hit seven of his ten three-point attempts.
“I came off a screen and I’m just glad I was able to make the shot,” Mockford said afterwards. “Tonight the shots were going down for me but more importantly I’m just happy I was able to help the team win.”
Shane Walker’s Loyola Maryland team recorded only their second loss of the season on Sunday as they were beaten by St Bonaventure. Walker played fewer minutes than usual due to foul trouble, finishing with nine points and four rebounds.
Alasdair Fraser scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting as Maine cruised to victory over Utah Valley. Fraser also grabbed five rebounds and did not turn the ball over.
Will Neighbour was limited to 21 minutes against Oral Roberts after getting into foul trouble. The sophomore forward finished with six points, four rebounds and two blocks. Neighbour played better against Louisiana Tech, scoring 12 points on 5-8 shooting, but missed a game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds.
Otherwise, it was a quiet week for Brits in college basketball. Alex Marcotullio played only three minutes for Northwestern this week as he continues to be hampered by injury, while Ashley Hamilton’s foot problem is expected to keep him out until the new year.
