Great Britain Climb the FIBA Rankings

Great Britain continue to climb the FIBA World Rankings after another season of senior men’s continental championships, moving from 56th place to 43rd.

The thirteen place climb, is the second biggest leap of any team in the rankings, behind F.Y.R. of Macedonia’s fourteen place improvement to get inside the top 35, at 33.

GB’s ascent comes after appearing in their second consecutive Eurobasket, going 2/3 to take fourth place in Group A but failing to advance.

The top 10 remains unchanged since last year’s World Championships in Turkey with world champions USA taking top honours, followed by reigning two-time EuroBasket winners Spain second and FIBA Americas gold medallists Argentina third.

The FIBA Men’s Ranking is based on an eight-year cycle and includes two FIBA World Championships, two Olympic Games and four of every continental championships (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania).

Whenever a new championship is played, the oldest championship of that category is dropped. Despite there being many flaws in the ranking system, it is referred to often by the British press and any improvement by GB should be greatly received.
