Shaquille O’Neal, the most physically dominant player of his generation (arguably of all time) is calling time on his career. The star has posted a short video on Twitter, saying he’s about to retire.
The 15-time All-Star – who played on six different teams and won four rings – did not notify his latest team, Boston, of his plans.
“To my knowledge, he has not informed any of us that he’s retiring,” Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said.
If he goes, O’Neal retires fifth all-time with 28,596 points, 12th with 13,099 rebounds and second only to Artis Gilmore among players with more than 2,000 baskets with a .582 field goal percentage.
In his last few seasons, Diesel was a shadow of his former self. But it should always be remembered that his contributions to basketball went far beyond his presence on the court. In the post-Jordan era, he was the global face of the NBA…and was always good for a quote.
His outspoken nature and sense of humour have led many to speculate whether his next career will be in the TV studio.
Whatever he does, we wish The Man Of Steel all the best.
