MAHER NAMES INITIAL GB SQUAD FOR EUROS

Great Britain women's coach Tom Maher has named a 16-strong initial squad for this summer's Eurobasket finals in Poland.

The team will assemble at Surrey Sports Park on May 1 to prepare for the start of the international season.

The enlarged group will go through training camp camp, plus friendlies in Surrey, Latvia and Turkey, before the roster is cut to 12 players ahead of Eurobasket.

“This is a tremendously exciting time for British Basketball,” said Maher.

“Selection is always difficult but we have assembled the best list possible and hope to continue to make significant inroads against the rest of Europe.

“It is important that the players prepare well for camp so we can build on the progress we made last season, both individually and as a team.”

Jo Leedham has been included despite concerns over her fitness while Mairi Buchan, one of the stars of last year's GB Under-20 side, is called up despite red-shirting this season at Old Dominion due to injury.

However there is no place for Sarah McKay who has missed this campaign after knee surgery or for Sheffield Hatters guard Lisa Hutchinson. Jeyena Wade-Frey is the other notable absentee.

Squad: Rose Anderson, Mairi Buchan, Kim Butler, Kate Butters, Stef Collins, Steph Gandy, Chantelle Handy, Jo Leedham, Ros Mason, Sarah Naylor, Yemi Oyefuwa, Julie Page, Natalie Stafford, Azania Stewart, Lauren Thomas-Johnson, Rachel Vanderwall
