Barking Abbey product Robert Gilchrist (1990 born) has received All Suncoast Conference First Team honours for his play at Division 1 JUCO Polk State College this season.
The crazy athletic 6’8″ Gilchrist (check his mixtape with his highlights from Future Stars 2009) averaged 9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game (good for 16th in the nation) on 48.1% shooting for the season, helping Polk State to the conference title with a 7-2 record in Suncoast Conference play (17-13 overall).
Despite the individual recognition, Gilchrist remains focused on his goal of winning a state championship. Talking to Hoopsfix said:
“It’s a good achievement and I am happy to get the recognition but I am focused and still working hard towards winning the state tournament.
We have a young team but have a lot of talent on our roster so we definitely have a chance at winning the state.”
By virtue of their Suncoast Conference championship, Polk State received an automatic bid for the post season, and will now spend a couple weeks getting in some practice time to prepare for the FCCAA – NJCAA Region 8 Tournament in Marianna, FL March 2nd-5th.
