MVP Editor Greg Tanner hosted a special quiz night at Footlocker’s House Of Hoops store on Oxford Street this week. On offer was an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the Nike World Basketball Festival in New York.
25 people who’d made it through to the finals via an online quiz were split into 5 teams of 5 (labeled China, Brazil, France, Puerto Rico and USA). The whole set up was jokes – with buzzers, sound effects, big screens…kinda like a TV gameshow. I felt like Les Dennis or something! lol
But right from the get-go, it was a two horse race between Team China (seen below – featuring, amongst others, Adam ‘Biscuit’ Lovelock, Lemara Lindsay-Price and Noel Santos) and Brazil (with Courtney Van-Beest and Oladimeji Olaolorun). Both teams (Brazil in particular) were interrupting questions after barely three words had been uttered…but somehow, miraculously, kept guessing the right answers. It was some serious psychic thing, trust me!
However, one of the Brazil team caused the biggest laugh of the night when, in response to the question “in what country are this year’s World Championships being held?” he answered “New York”.
Cue merciless cussing!
A video of it is on Facebook. You might not be able to see it unless you’re friends with Noel Santos…but the link is here still.
Anyway, the two teams made it through to the next round, where some technical problems caused a bit of controversy – and Brazil found themselves losing out to China by one point.
After that, the five members of the China squad went from being team mates to enemies as they faced each other for a spot in the final. But, again, two people were way ahead of the rest…Adam Lovelock and James Tickle (who’d come all the way down from Birmingham!!)
In the final, a new piece of Family Fortunes style equipment was brought into play…but Biscuit destroyed the competition 5-1 to win the big prize.
“Oh my god, I just can’t get my head round it,” he said after his victory.
“I’ve wanted to go to New York since I was 10 years old. Now, to do this and go on this occasion is crazy. To see all these guys in the flesh will be crazy.”
As well as the flights and accommodation, Biscuit will get $500 spending money…and a hook up at the Footlocker store in NYC.
Congrats to him – and thanks to the guys at Footlocker, Nike and Frank PR who made this thing possible.
