The arena was opened in January 2019 as a partnership with Newcastle City Council, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, Sport England and Newcastle College, after construction work had began in November 2017.

Newcastle Eagles’ owner Paul Blake was the big driving force behind the arena, with it having been a goal of his for over a decade for the club and its foundation to own and control their own facility.

The Vertu Motors arena was awarded three prizes in special achievement, community value and social accessibility at the 2020 Lord Mayor’s Design Awards.

There are currently plans to try to extend the arena, with an extra 1000 seats, along with two more basketball courts.
