GB U16 Women gain Division A promotion

The Great Britain Under-16 Women gained promotion to Division A after winning bronze with an 84-62 win over hosts Türkiye on Sunday at the Youth Eurobasket.

GB led from start to finish to put a positive end to what has been an underwhelming summer overall for the GB youth programmes.

Milton Keynes’ Athena Thompson led the scoring with 24 points, helping her lead Division B in scoring at 22.6 points per game and landing herself a spot on the All-Star Five.

Meanwhile, Irene Oboavwodou added 14 points and Emma Briggs had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“This was a very special GB U16 women’s team to work with,” Head Coach Donnie MacDonald told Basketball Scotland.

“It has been a privilege to get to know each and every one of them and to see them achieve their goal of promotion to Division A.”

The squad went 5-2 overall at the tournament, routing Bosnia & Herzegovina (105–34) and Estonia (77–51). A 79–63 loss to Lithuania brought the team back down to earth before they bounced back to defeat Iceland (82–66) to come from 16 points down in their final group game.

From there, they dispatched of Denmark (86–61) in the quarter-final, before a narrow 65–61 defeat to the Czech Republic in the semis saw them match up with Türkiye for third place and promotion, which they achieved.
