It was Kentucky and Marist who came away as victors in the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase on Sunday at the O2 Arena in London.
In front of a little under 8,000 fans, Kentucky held on against Michigan, 73-69 in a marquee match up of college basketball powerhouses, while Marist escaped vs Maine 62-61, sending hometown Brit Gedi Juozapaitis back to the US without a win.
Jacob Toppin and Cason Wallace top scored for Kentucky with 14 points each as five players reached double digits, while Michigan were led by 23 points and 9 rebounds from big man Hunter Dickinson. The battle of star big men Dickinson and Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe saw Tshiebwe finish with 13 points and 14 rebounds in spite of battling foul trouble.
Meanwhile, despite holding a six point lead with under 3 minutes left, Maine fell to Marist thanks to a Kam Farris layup in the dying seconds.
Patrick Gardner was unstoppable on his way to 27 points and 9 rebounds to lead Maris.
Kellen Tynes finished with his second double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for Maine, as Juozapaitis had 7 points and 2 assists on 3-of-9 shooting.
