First bespoke 3×3 courts in the UK open at Writtle University College

Writtle College 3x3 Basketball Courts

The UK’s first dedicated 3×3 basketball courts have officially opened at Writtle University College, near Chelmsford, Essex.

The 10-court venue – four on the main campus and a further six at the Sports Grounds, offers state-of-the-art, adjustable hoops in a floodlit setting, along with a show court designed by by artist Molly Hawkins.

“Specialist courts are an important step in promoting this exciting and inclusive sport,” WUC’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Middleton, said.

“I was delighted to hear of 3×3’s addition to the Olympics and Commonwealth Games and look forward to seeing the game continue to grow.

“I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for their many contributions. Without your
expert advice and assistance, these fantastic facilities would not have been possible.”

It is the first educational institution in the UK to invest in fast growing sport, with new facilities and sponsorship of the LDN Warriors.

“3×3 is basketball at its most inclusive,” WUC’s Head of Sport, Dr Greg Deacon, enthused.

“These courts are the first of many fantastic projects that will help us to support students, athletes and the local community.”


Martin Dyan, WUC’s 3×3 Consultant, added: “The team at Writtle University College had the most
amazing vision for these court and Molly designed a beautiful show court – one of the best I’ve ever
seen. It’s a pleasure and an honour to be part of the team behind this.”
