EUROBASKETS MAY MOVE TO FIT GAMES

FIBA will consider moving the 2021 EuroBaskets after the Olympic Games were shifted to next year.

Confirmation that Tokyo 2020 will take place on from July 23-August 8 in 2021 is set to ensure the participation of NBA players who would have been excluded if the alternative of a spring Games had been pursued.

Yet the men’s and women’s basketball championships of Europe and other continents are now up in the air with the men’s – due to be held in four separate countries from 2-29 September 2021 – seemingly certain to be forced into a date alteration, given the lack of attraction for two international tournaments in quick succession for leading countries.

The women’s EuroBasket, slated for France and Spain from 17-27 June and already overlapping with the re-arranged men’s football version, could still double as a warm-up event for the Olympics.

But although its co-hosts are keen to continue with its present placement, it may also be redrawn due to workload and player welfare considerations – with 2022, a previously free summer in the international calendar, an option along with complete cancellation.

“Now that the decision on Olympics is taken we will talk to all stakeholders to see what are the necessary steps about dates, etc,” a FIBA source confirmed. “This is a complex situation.”

No timeframe has been established to decide on any revision for EuroBasket, the AmeriCup, AfroBasket and other championships although several large events due to take place during the new Olympic window, including the Tour de France and Lions rugby tour, are expected to consult broadcasters before locking in a revamped timetable.
