PRIDE A PASSION WORTH FIGHTING FOR
Sarah Thomson wants Caledonia Pride to bag the WBBL Cup in Birmingham today – and prove it’s a club worth investing in.
The Edinburgh-based outfit will land a major women’s basketball trophy in just their second season in existence if they see off Nottingham Wildcats in front of a sell-out 10,000-crowd and a live BBC audience.
Yet no-one knows if the Pride will still be around past this summer after an initial funding deal runs out.
But our success, Thomson claims, shows there’s something special happening that deserves the chance to carry on.
The Scots star said: “It’s definitely worth it. Look at what’s been done in two years – it’s ginormous.
“Yeah, we might not have the most talented squad on paper but we have so much potential as a team. And as a brand. No-one else has one that’s as strong as ours.
“You see the WBBL games broadcast on the BBC – you look at what we do around the games and it’s head and shoulders above everybody. A game days isn’t just about turning up and playing – it’s a full-on event.
“So I think it would be a shame if it wasn’t in the WBBL and more teams should be following our lead.â€
A post-Christmas slump means the Pride will be huge underdogs to come away with the prize. But we’ve improved so much, so fast, that no-one should write us off, Thomson insists.
“This time last year, we were losing games by 40. Now we’re going for a trophy. That’s definitely huge progress. It also gives us confidence going to the game.â€
