ADEGBOYE RETIRES, AGE 30
Ogo Adegboye has announced his retirement from basketball at the age of 30.
The point guard, one of the finest playmakers the UK has produced in a generation, announced his decision via his Instagram page on Friday – over six months after what turned out to be his final game with Italian side Forli.
A product of Brixton Topcats, the Nigerian-born, London-raised player represented Great Britain at two EuroBaskets following his senior debut in 2010 but was a surprise ommission from the 2012 Olympic roster.
Following a scholarship at St. Bonaventures University, he divided most of his club career between Italy, Greece and Cyprus but in a post confirming his departure, Adegboye revealed a battle against depression that had led him on a path to walking away.
“In what,” he wrote, “has been one of the toughest times in my life, coming out of depression and searching for an identity outside of the game I sacrificed everything for, I found an overwhelming peace.”
