British Basketball Federation Chairman Nick Humby has stepped down, as the Federation have announced the appointment of Lisa Wainwright as Interim CEO.
The departure of Humby less than 12 months into the role will serve as a blow to the sport, which has been churning through senior figures in the past 24 months, but it is believed he may stay on in an advisory capacity.
Lisa has significant experience in sports administration and governing bodies, having previously held senior roles at Sport England, England Netball, internationally and most recently CEO at Volleyball England for 8 years. This is in addition to her non-executive portfolio with the Amateur Swimming Association as Deputy Chair and IOS Chair.
She joins British Basketball in the Interim CEO position through to the end of March, aiming to help drive the implementation of the new strategy, “Transforming Basketball in Britain Together 2016-2028.”
That will include putting together a small team of staff with support from governance funding from Sport England, with an aim to get the foundations of the business in place to deliver the National Team programmes in the summer of 2017.
Lisa is not a complete stranger to basketball in this country, having had multiple dealings with the sport in her role at Sport England.
On her appointment Lisa said, “I am delighted to take on this new challenge with the BBF, particularly considering the men’s recent qualification for Eurobasket 2017 and the women’s campaign for qualification in November.”
Meanwhile, she is aware that it is time for action from the BBF following 12 months of strategy and planning.
“Bring the team in and just start delivering,” she said to Hoopsfix of her immediate next steps. “That’s pretty critical for us moving forward. The sport has got a decent strategy now, it’s time to start delivering.”
Bill Mcinnes has been appointed as Interim Chairman to replace Humby, and welcomes the hiring of Wainwright.
“The BBF Board and in particular Nick, have worked hard to secure resources to bring in more people to support the delivery of the new strategy and support the teams to get them as best prepared as we can.
“I am delighted we have secured Lisa in this interim role. Her leadership, experience and network will enable us to move the outcomes of the new strategy forwards at pace.
“Nick has set a firm foundation in place and we thank him for his time and vision.”
