Gordon Debut Not Enough to See GB Past Germany

Ben Gordon’s long awaited debut was not enough to get the Great Britain Senior Men past Germany, as they fell to a 78-61 loss on Saturday evening in Coimbra, Portugal.

Gordon had a game-high 17 points in his 23 minutes – leaving many wondering what could have been had he made his debut prior to the London 2012 Olympics alongside the likes of Luol Deng and Joel Freeland – but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome a strong German side.

Gabe Olaseni also had a strong debut, registering 10 points and 4 rebounds, while Rob Gilchrist had 8 and Gareth Murray 5.

GB gave up an early lead 5 minutes into the game and would trail the rest of the way, with Germany extending their lead to as many as 24 points.

The loss dropped GB to 0-2 in their preparation so far, following a loss to Portugal on Friday night.

Gb will now head to Slovenia for a week’s further practice and prep games, before travelling to Manchester for two games against the Netherlands over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

When preparations are complete, the EuroBasket 2017 qualification games begin in Hungary on Wednesday August 31st.

That precedes three crucial home qualifiers in a week against FYR of Macedonia (Saturday September 3rd, 6.30pm), Luxembourg (Wednesday September 7th, 7pm) & Hungary (Saturday September 10th, 6.30pm) at the Copper Box Arena in London.
