England U16s Fall to Defeat Against Israel

England Under-16’s unbeaten start to the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, came to an end on Saturday after they were beaten 87-80 by Israel.

Kareem Queeley impressed with 20 points with England moving ahead in the fourth before ultimately falling short as their opponents sealed the win from the free throw line.

Jacob Round added 16 points in support, while there was an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double from Richard Amaefule with England now 2-1 in their group.

After trailing 14-19 in the first, a three from Mate Okros was followed by six points from Daniel Ogoro to give their side a lead at the end of the opening 10 minutes. However, after a close fought second period, England would head into half-time trailing 41-40.

A strong opening to the third saw England lead by as many as seven in the period at 55-48, but Israel battled back to move ahead before England levelled at 58 going into the fourth.

England moved into a four-point advantage with five minutes remaining as they sensed another victory at 70-66. However, back came Israel and a 11-2 run proved pivotal with England unable to claw back the deficit in the closing stages.
