Steven Gayle Leads Lancashire Spinners to Patrons Cup Victory

Player-coach Steven Gayle came up with an incredible all-round display to lead his Lancashire Spinners side to a 118-86 victory over Division Two rivals London Lituanica in the Patrons Cup Final.

Gayle finished with a stat-line to be admired with 22 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds as well as 7 steals to claim a deserved MVP award.

Mark Rangeley also scored 22 points in his role off the bench, while Josh Houghton knocked down 4-5 from beyond the arc for his 16 points and Kenny Ogunneye grabbed a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double that included 10 offensive boards.

The two teams are currently locked in a tight battle in the Division Two title race and there wasn’t much to separate them early on as the Spinners closed the opening quarter with a 13-2 run to lead 23-19. They racked up an impressive 95 points in the next three quarters and the scoring firepower was too much for their opponents to handle.

The gap began to rise in the second, but was still in single figures until Houghton and captain, Estrada netted triples to end the half with Lancashire up 15 at 56-41. London Lituanica found themselves down by 20 midway through the third, before a mini-revival came via an 8-0 run only for the Spinners to respond to open up a 21-point gap heading into the final quarter.

The Spinners enjoyed the luxury of running the bench in the final quarter as they powered towards a comfortable victory and will now be looking to add to their Cup success as the D2 title race heats up.
