FIBA World Cup 2014 – Day 3 Round-up

The third day of the FIBA World Cup 2014 saw the first two teams make it into the second round as Spain and Greece maintained their perfect starts to the tournament.

Here’s a re-cap of the day’s action:

Group A:

Serbia bounced back from their narrow defeat against France to improve to a 2-1 record with an 83-70 success over Iran. Nemanja Bjelica led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Iran duo Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkah-Bahrami combined for 49 points for their side. France edged closer to the next stage with a crushing 94-55 win against Egypt with scoring spread across the roster, led by Joffrey Lauvergne’s 12 points. In the final game, tournament hosts Spain made it 3/3 after making light work of a tough challenge against Brazil to win 82-63 helped by a strong start. Chicago Bulls’ Pau Gasol was again in top form adding 26 points and 9 rebounds including making 3/5 from downtown.

Group B:

The first upset of Spain 2014 came at Croatia’s expense as African minnows Senegal pulled off a surprising 77-75 victory. Croatia had to battle back in the second half but it was to be in vain as their 100% start ended. Gorgui Dieng continued his excellent start to the tournament with a 27 point haul playing the full 40 minutes to help his side to a second win. Argentina survived a late charge from the Philippines to record their second victory with an 85-81 triumph in Sevilla. Captain Luis Scola had a 19-7-4 stat-line to lead his side as they edged towards progressing to the last 16. The final game saw Greece maintain their winning start with a 90-79 victory over the Dominican Republic after an impressive middle period. Kostas Kaimakoglou produced an efficient display with 9 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists with Nikos Zisis top scoring with 19 points.
