Norton’s Winner Gives England U16s Victory Over Belarus

England’s U16 Women got back to winning ways with a dramatic 64-63 victory over Belarus thanks to a Shanice Norton game-winning layup with 12 seconds left.

England squandered a double-digit fourth quarter lead and found themselves down 63-62 in the closing moments, but a driving lay-up from Shanice Norton put them back in front and Belarus were not able to respond.

An 8-0 run early in the final period had put England 56-46 ahead, but as they had done throughout the game the Belarussians fought back and they enjoyed a 13-2 run capped by a three from Viktoryia Skrabko to set up the nail-biting finish.

Abigail Lowe led England with 16 points, shooting 6 of 7 from the field and 3 from 3 from behind the arc. Savannah Wilkinson had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Samantha Clement joined them in double figures with 11 points. Abigail Johnson returned to action, hauling in 15 rebounds, a statistic she stands a good chance of leading the tournament in.

England now have a day off before they face off with the team that finishes bottom of Group F for a spot in the 5th place playoff game.
