England U16s Routed by Serbia

England’s U16 Women fell heavily to Serbia, going down 80-44 in the European Championship (Division B) on Wednesday dropping them 0-2 in the classification table and they will now play for 5th-8th place.

Finland’s defeat of Belarus on Wednesday ensures England and the Belarusians will miss the semi-finals regardless of the game between the two teams on Thursday.

“Unfortunately the loss of Abigail Johnson through a shoulder injury made the task against a very talented Serbian team an even bigger problem,” said head coach Karen Burton.

“We started better in the game than in the previous three, however through lack of concentration and moving away from our game plan they took advantage. Having said that the way we responded in the second half was pleasing coming out with great intensity on defence. Too many turnovers saw the game run away from us, but we are definitely capable of fifth place.”

England turned the ball over 29 times, as Serbia had a 20 point lead by half time.

Savannah Wilkinson had 9 points and 9 rebounds to lead England in both categories. Katarina Zec had 23 points and 9 boards for the Serbians who are heading to the semi-finals.

Box score.
