England Under-16s had their three game winning streaked snapped by Slovenia on Sunday, suffering a 72-70 loss, but will still advance to the 1st-8th place classification games at the Division B European Championships in Sarajevo.
England are currently top of Group B with a 3-1 record, but after the Slovenia-Romania game on Monday they will finish second no matter the result. A Slovenia win would put them clear winners with a 4-0 record whereas a Romania win would see the three nations tied at 3-1. England would go through in this situation based on their previous win over Romania.
Coach Kapoulas was on the other end of a fourth quarter comeback against Slovenia, as they went on a 12-2 run in the final minutes to seal the win. When Josh Steel scored his 16th point with four minutes left, England led 68-60, but Slovenia reeled off 12 straight and the next England bucket would be a Steel lay-up near the buzzer.
Steel had a solid outing with 18 points and 7 rebounds while Aidan Gastaldi-Davies went 4/7 from three to finish with 14 points, whilst Akwasi Yeboah had 13 and Calvin Nevill-Kintu added 12.
England will now have a two days rest before beginning the second round on Wednesday.
