Mersey Tigers have been axed from the British Basketball League after having their franchise withdrawn.
It comes months after the Liverpool club became the first to complete a top flight campaign without a single win.
Mersey were champions of the league just two years ago but have been beset by ongoing financial problems and a legacy of debt left by the Tigers’ previous ownership.
And although it is understood they were given an extension to fulfil strict requirements in recent weeks, the BBL has expelled them from the competition.
With Birmingham Knights coming in, it leaves the league with 12 teams for the coming season which will start on September 27, and once again place the BBL Trophy in the latter half of the campaign.
The regular season will end on April 20 with the BBL play-off final slated for Wembley in mid-May.
