Luol Deng GB vs Spain OlympicsGreat Britain were drawn in Group A for Eurobasket 2013 this week, joining 2011 runners up, France, along with Germany, Belgium, Ukraine and Israel.

It will be the third consecutive appearance at Eurobasket for GB and represent the first time they haven’t been drawn in the “Group of Death”, which is being labelled as Group B with Montenegro, Serbia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (MKD), Lithuania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Latvia.

“It is critical that we maintain the momentum we have established over the past two EuroBasket competitions and in this year’s Olympic Games,” commented British Basketball Performance Director, Chris Spice.

“We have been drawn in a group where we have had great rivalries in the past few years, with France, Israel, Belgium and the Ukraine. Germany will be tough after their outstanding qualification tournament last year too.”

It remains to be seen what GB’s roster will look like, with much speculation a handful players will opt for a summer of rest, having not had a break from international competition for a number of years.

Furthermore, the head coach is yet to be appointed after Chris Finch stepped down after the Olympics. Applications for the position closed today.

“There are no easy games in EuroBasket and we will take each one at a time, ” added Spice. “I am confident with the right coaching staff, preparation and player commitment we can advance beyond the pool stages.”
