England U16s suffered their third consecutive loss at the Division A European Championships in Latvia, losing 78-54 to the heavily favoured Croatia on Saturday in Latvia – leaving them battling to avoid relegation back to Division B.
They are now amongst four teams looking to play for one spot in the European Championship Division A next summer, joining Russia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic in the Classification Round for 13th-16th place, with only the top team in this safe from relegation to Division B in 2013.
England did well to stick with the Croatians for 30 minutes, trailing 10 points going into the final quarter, but a 23-9 final period for Croatia sealed England’s defeat to complete the preliminary round.
Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye led England with 13 points, whilst Justas Muzikevicius had an 11 point, 10 rebound double double.
England’s quest to avoid relegation begins on Monday against Czech Republic in Lithuania.
