Newcastle Eagles have completed their swoop for England international Andrew Thomson.
The centre, who was a fulcrum of Mersey Tigers title run last season, has agreed a deal with the Tyneside outfit for next term despite interest from overseas.
Thomson won the British BBL Player of the Year with Mersey after an impressive campaign.
Eagles coach Fab Flournoy said: “Andy was a real thorn in our side last season and I am delighted to welcome him to the Eagles.
“He is a skilled big man whose inside game has really developed over the past couple of years. I see him as a potential focal point of our team and a player who I hope will improve even further during his time with us as Andy undoubtedly has the ability to feature in the GB program for years to come”.
Meanwhile Eagles chairman Paul Blake has confirmed that the club are still holding talks with Charles Smith to defer his retirement and return to Newcastle.
The American veteran hinted at hanging up his boots in June before returning to the USA with his family.
However Blake has not given up hope of luring him back.
“We’ve kept the communication channels open with Charles to make sure he knows where we’re going,†he said.
“What that means just now is that we don’t know whether he is retiring or not.â€
