Great Britain See Off Nigeria

Great Britain moved to 2-0 in their warm up games as they saw off Nigeria 95-80 on Tuesday night in Cobham, Surrey.

Top point guard prospect Devon van Oostrum led Chris Finch’s side in scoring with 18 points, Ogo Adegboye had 13, with veteran Mike Lenzly going 100% from the field for 12 points. Future call up Kyle Johnson had 11, whilst Eric Boateng cleaned up on the glass with 14 rebounds.

Devon was pleased with the victory and remained modest about top scoring:

“It was a good win tonight, Nigeria were a better team than Holland. It’s not all about top scoring, I think I brought some energy off the bench too and it was great helping the team to the win.”

Assistant coach, Nick Nurse was delighted with the performance:

“It’s been a really perfect two-game tournament for us. We’ve have a lot guys here and we’ve shown we’ve got a lot of depth, so it’ll be difficult to figure out the final roster, but that’s a great problem to have.”

Notes

  • GB starters: Ogo Adegboye, Nate Reinking, Mike Lenzly, Eric Boateng, Matthew Bryan-Amaning
  • Joel Freeland, Dan Clark, Andrew Sullivan and Alex Marcotullio all sat out for GB.
  • GB shot lights out from deep, going 17/29 from the field (58.6%)
  • Nigeria were a big, physical team that GB struggled to keep off the offensive glass, much to the frustration of Chris Finch.
  • Ryan Richards checked in and had 7 points in 3 minutes, but picked up 3 quick fouls, which saw him sitting for a large part of the game. He finished with 9.
  • Nobody could stay in front of Devon van Oostrum. He is lightning quick, and used changes of speed, and his superior ball handling skills to cause Nigeria trouble all night, splitting double teams and getting to the rim.
  • Eric Boateng was named the tournament’s MVP after the game.
  • A good quality recording of this game will be available in the next week.
