Joel Freeland, the 6’11” 250lbs Unicaja Malaga big man has confirmed he “will definitely play” for Team GB this summer, providing a major boost for a Great Britain side that has been done no favours after being drawn in the ‘group of death’ for Eurobasket 2011.
In an interview published today with with Real GM, Freeland, asked the question whether he plans to play for his country, responded:
“I missed last year but this year I will definitely play. I didn’t play last year because of my ankle. I was having problems with my ankle and I wanted to fix it before I came to Malaga.”
Even with the confirmation of Freeland, now widely considered one of the premier big men in Europe, Great Britain are in for no easy ride after being drawn in Group A-against the likes of powerhouses such as Spain, Turkey and hosts Lithuania-but Freeland remains unfazed:
“We’re fighters and GB is a team of fighters. We take every challenge. I remember the last EuroBasket, for us it’s great achievement to almost beat a team like Spain, world champions. I just know that we will have a good team and will be ready. We’re looking forward to this summer to come to Lithuania and play.”
