GB U23 big man Liam Potter has signed with Ukrainian Superleague side BC Khimik–Yuzhny. The Ukrainian side reversed the decision that saw them releasing him after a 7 day tryout at the beginning of this month.
The 7’0″, 230lbs center has just finished his college career at NCAA Division 1 Sacred Heart University where he averaged 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds whilst shooting 50.5% from the field in his Senior year.
Hoopsfix got a chance to catch up with Potter from Ukraine earlier today, and he explained how he is looking forward to the challenge of playing in Europe:
“I am just looking forward to getting into the swing of things and developing as a player in europe. I feel with the right coaching and team I will develop my game tremendously over here. Our season starts tomorrow against Odessa which is the derby game for our club-they are a huge rival so I’m looking forward to that, the crowd should be crazy!”
Off the court, there will of course be some serious cultural adjustments, something Liam thinks may take a while to get used to:
“I only got here 3 days ago so it is hard to say how the lifestyle is here although from what I have seen so far and talking to the guys it is going to be a tough place to get adjusted to. Not many people speak good English and it is a very quiet town. I am just grateful for this opportunity I have been given and I plan on making the most of it. I am taking everyday as it comes and trying to play my best-that’s all I can do right now.”
Hoopsfix wants to wish Liam all the best with his season in Ukraine. Expect regular updates on his progress on here!
