GB Beat Ukraine, Remain Unbeaten at 4-0

Luol Deng GB vs Ukraine Birmingham

Luol Deng was dominant to seal the victory

GB Men added to their unbeaten streak taking down Ukraine 90-76 to go 4-0 and remain atop of Group B in their Eurobasket 2011 qualifying campaign.

The scoreline wasn’t truly effective of how close the game was, with the victory not being sealed until superstar Luol Deng took over the game scoring 8 points in 42 seconds in the last minute and a half including a spectacular dunk on a fast break the sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Deng finished with 28 points, adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists whilst Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 15 and 8 boards. Dan Clark was one rebound shy of a double double with 13 points and 9 rebounds, the ever dependable Nate Reinking dropped 14 and Ogo Adegboye had 10. Full box score and play by play available here.

Head Coach Chris Finch, talking about the victory, said:

“It was really similar to all of our performances and we’re in an excellent position as we’re 4&0. But as I said to the guys it’s important to keep it in context, we’re winning the games in the last four minutes and there’s not much margin for error.

“I’m really proud of the guys, they’re out there giving 100 percent, playing a lot of minutes and making the big plays down the stretch. We dug deep, and the guys stepped up in the final minutes.

“Dan Clark’s been hugely instrumental in our success to date, he’s doesn’t draw a lot of attention but he’s got a great basketball IQ, he passes well, rebounds well and made huge step forward from last year. This team suits him a little better than last year, and he’s seized the opportunity.”

Team GB will next be in action on Tuesday against Hungary.
