OWUMI GIVEN BETTING BAN
Former BBL star Alex Owumi has been banned for betting offences.
Owumi, who recently retired after closing his career at NBL side Worthing Thunder, has been suspended from playing or attending all basketball in Great Britain for six weeks and fined £1,000 for betting on basketball games.
It follows an investigation by the British Basketball Federation, in conjunction with FIBA, the Gambling Commission Sports Betting Intelligence Unit, the GB betting industry, and the IOC Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions.
The incidents took place in January 2020 and involved betting on handicap markets on a contest involving Worthing – understood to be January’s 88-84 victory over Manchester Giants in the opening round of the BBL Trophy in which he scored 22 points – as well as betting on another game in the same competition.
A statement said that this is a “contravention of the FIBA Code of Ethics, as detailed at the time of the offences. It is also a breach of the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions.â€
According to the BBF, Owumi – who previously played for London Lions and Worcester Wolves – will not appeal. He declined comment to MVP but in a Tweet, he said: “Y’all know me. Please don’t believe that mess. #crazyworld”
FIBA have the right to impose further sanctions under its regulations.
