Hildreth’s Free Throw Sees GB Under-16s Past Portugal

Cameron Hildreth

Cameron Hildreth split a pair of free throws with 5 seconds remaining to give the Great Britain Under-16s a 53-52 win over Portugal at the Division B European Championship in Sarajevo on Monday night.

After Portugal’s Andre Cruz hit a tough reverse lay up to tie the game at 52 with 15 seconds left, Hildreth got the ball out of a timeout and drove left to draw a foul. He knocked down the first to give GB the lead, before missing the second, as Veron Eze got a hand to it to delay Portugal’s possession before time expired and the celebrations began.

“I am very proud of our team tonight,” Head Coach James Vear said.

“They toughed out one against a talented and well-coached Portugal team, but we have to make sure we remain focussed as we play a good Sweden team tomorrow.”

Sam Grant led GB with 14 points before being forced to leave the game with an ankle injury, Segun Shodunke had 11 points and 7 rebounds, whilst Matt Marsh finished with 9 points and 13 boards. GB managed to pull out the win despite shooting 28% from the field, pulling in 17 offensive rebounds.

Box score.

GB have one final group game remaining, as they play Sweden on Tuesday, where they will aim to finish the preliminary phase 4-1.
