Of everything that went down at the first parliament debate on basketball funding in five years, nothing got more attention than Tottenham MP David Lammy’s passionate speech on the need to support basketball.
A segment of Lammy’s speech, which you can watch above, has now amassed over 40,000 views online, and received plaudits from across the British basketball community, including the likes of Dan Clark, Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
The 45 year old, who has represented Tottenham in parliament since 2000, paid tribute to local clubs Haringey Angels and Haringey Hawks and the nice outdoor facilities his constituency has in Ducketts Common (Turnpike Lane) and Finsbury Park, talking about the problems of gun and knife crime, the discrepancy between basketball funding and other sports, and the need for positive role models that that basketball can provide.
