Basketball Participation on Rise in Latest APS Survey

New figures published this week by Sport England reveal that basketball participation amongst those aged 16+ has increased by nearly 11,000 players over the last 6 months.

The Active People Survey (APS), an annual study conducted by Sport England that interviewed 160,010 people between Oct 2014 and Sept 2015, showed that basketball has the third highest percentage growth behind athletics and tennis.

163,800 players aged 16+ now play basketball at least once a week and there are signs of an increase in the number of people playing the sport outdoors, as well as the indoor game. Basketball England as the governing body has been working with clubs, satellite clubs plus partners including Reach & Teach and The Basketball Foundation to grow participation in the sport.

“The figures published this week demonstrate the increasing popularity of our sport in England,” Grace Jacca, Interim Chair of Basketball England, said.

“We are committed to growing participation and engagement across all sections of the population and continue to work with our partners to do so.”
