England U16s came up just short of registering their second win at the Division A European Championships on Saturday after losing 66-64 to Slovenia.
With both teams already having been relegated to Division B for next season, there was nothing to play for but pride and despite the loss, head coach Andreas Kapoulas remained positive:
“Today it was a tough loss especially considering that we led for most of the game. We played a very good game of basketball but the pressure got to us in the last two minutes of the game.
“We had the opportunity in the last 6 seconds of the game to send it to overtime or win it but unfortunately we were not able to get a shot off. Our energy levels were really high today and I am very proud of how our players responded after the very close game to the Czechs yesterday.”
Theo Oghide led England with 17 points and 9 rebounds, and Joe Mvuezolo added 14 as the only other player in double figures.
England will finish off their Division A campaign with a game against Russia, who are undefeated so far in the classification round, on Sunday afternoon.
