2012 BUCS Final 8′s Day 2 Recap

Day 2 of the 2012 BUCS Final 8’s saw the two favourites, Durham and Worcester, arrange a finals match-up with each other tomorrow after both securing wins in their semi-finals. Game reports, leading scorers and notes below:

BUCS Basketball Final 8′s Day 1 Results

Game 1
Middlesex vs LSBU
In the biggest upset of the day, Middlesex got past a short-handed LSBU 91-85 in Overtime, to move into the fifth place playoff tomorrow. With Middlesex leading by 10 and appearing to be firmly in control with just 3 minutes to go in regulation, LSBU went on an improbable run punctuated by a Paul Mundy-Castle three pointer with 9 seconds left (having missed his last three attempts in the dying minutes) to send the game to OT. However, with both Arturo Noha and Karolis Petkus sitting out due to injuries, a lack of offensive firepower coupled with a Middlesex team who refused to lose, saw Middlesex hold on for the victory. Julius Visockas had 29 to lead Middlesex, whilst former LSBU student Aaron Moseley had 18 and Jamel Felix 22. Ave Antonio finished with 28 to lead LSBU, and Jason Sayers added 15.

Game 2
Brunel vs Oxford
Brunel had a comfortable 81-62 win, giving them their third win over the Oxford side this season. Louis Sayers finally found his form to lead Brunel with 25, whilst Daniel Dunscombe had 14. Karolis Bauza led Oxford with 19, Duffy had 11.

Game 3 (semi-final)
Durham vs Northumbria
Durham started as they intended to go on, jumping out to a 10-0 lead, and finishing with a comfortable 76-50 win to be the first team to book their place in the final. Mike Capocci once again led Durham with 22 points, whilst DJ Glavan added 15 to join him as the only other player in double figures for the Wildcats. Justin Hitchman and Siman Stewart led Northumbria with 13 points apiece.

Game 4 (semi-final
Worcester vs Leeds Met Carnegie
In easily the most entertaining game of the tournament so far, Worcester set up a meeting with Durham in the final after beating Leeds 87-78 in the semi. Worcester jumped out to a 34-20 lead after the first quarter behind Sherrad Prezzie-Blue’s hot start as he went 4/5 from beyond the arc. Behind the strong play of Dave Ajumobi, Leeds came storming back into it in the second, helped out by a technical foul call on Worcester’s head coach Paul James after what appeared to be an after-the-shot-clock three from Sean Clifford. At halftime, Leeds had managed to get it within five, 46-41, but that was as close as they’d get the rest of the way. Prezzie-Blue led Worcester with 27 points, Tommy Freeman added 15, with Zimnickas adding 14. Henry Wilkins led Leeds with 24, with Dave Ajumobi and Sean Clifford adding 17 and 11 respectively.

Schedule for Saturday

9am: LSBU vs Oxford (7th/8th place playoff)
11am: Brunel vs Middlesex (5th/6th place playoff)
1pm: Leeds vs Northumbria (3rd/4th place playoff)
5pm: Worcester vs Durham (Final)

Trophy Final

Loughborough had little trouble dispatching of Aberdeen in the 2012 BUCS basketball Trophy Final, getting a 77-44 victory behind 23 points from John Stewart as every Loughborough player got on the score sheet.

Damian Cope had 14, John Gould 13, whilst Jamell Anderson and Ramiah O’Niell added 11 each. E Duleckyte led Aberdeen with 23.

Jamell Anderson gets the highlight of the day for this very nice dunk off the board from Ramiah O’Niell.

Women’s Results

Loughborough beat Kent 89-32
Durham beat Northumbria 86-66 (semi-final)
Oxford beat Southbank 78-52
UWIC beat Edinburgh 58-31 (semi-final)
Trophy Final: Southampton Solent beat Newcastle 60-44

Notes

The refereeing has been absolutely terrible across the two days of the tournament so far. Coaches and players alike are getting furious.
As always seems to be the way at games at the EIS, so many players are being called for stepping out of bounds!
A fair few more highlights today than yesterday, Prezzie-Blue vs Leeds, Dave Ajumobi had the first dunk I’ve ever seen him throw down in the lane, plus a couple of end of quarter/half buzzer beaters.
Loughborough winning the Trophy was small consolation for not getting a chance to compete in the Final 8’s this year – no team has been screwed by the new format changes more than them.
