Van Oostrum’s Baskonia Go Out in Spanish Quarter Finals

Devon Van Oostrum‘s (1993 born) mission for a Spanish National Championship fell short this week as his Baskonia U18 side lost to DKV Joventut in the Spanish Junior Championship quarter finals, 53-50.

With the score tied at 50, Baskonia were called for a controversial shooting foul on a three point attempt, sending Joventut to the line with 0.5 seconds left where they hit all three shots to win the game.

Van Oostrum played 38 minutes, finishing with 20 points (5/7 twos, 3/8 triples), 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for a 25 efficiency rating, and being named Eurohopes’ performer of the day despite the loss.

Individually, it was a solid tournament for the England and GB international, finishing with an average efficiency rating of 17.8, making him the top ranked point guard in the tournament (seventh overall). He finished averaging 16.6 points (9th), 3 assists (7th) and 2.2 steals (12th) whilst shooting 75% on his two point field goals (24/32, 2nd in the tournament).

Dylan Johns, Fuenlabrada (1993 born)

Also in action at the Spanish champs was 7’0″ England U18 Dylan Johns, playing for Fuenlabrada, who also fell short to Joventut, being knocked out 67-65 in the semi-finals.

Johns’ tournament was solid, getting in the statistical leaders for blocks per game, averaging 1.1 per game (10th). He also added 5 points and 5.3 rebounds on 53% field goal shooting (16/30) in 18 minutes per game (over 6 games). His free throw shooting needs much improving after going a woeful 6/22 (27%).

His most efficient performance came in the ‘Octavos’ (Sweet 16) game, an 86-60 win over Blancos de Rueda, where he finished with 8 points on 3/3 shooting (2/2 at the line) and 6 rebounds in just 13 minutes.
