Germayne Forbes Not Given Up on GB Hopes

Former Team GB guard and current Marjons Plymouth Raider Germayne Forbes has not given up hope on making Great Britain side that will be travelling to Lithuania this summer for the European Championships.

Talking to This Is Plymouth, he said:

“It depends how these next few months go, if I can get back into tip-top shape I don’t see any reason why I can’t get back in the squad, or at least train with them and see how I go from there.

“I feel I can still play at that level. I’m still young. It wouldn’t be bad to play alongside (GB’s NBA stars) Ben Gordon and Luol Deng!”

Forbes has eight GB caps, all won in the build-up to the 2009 European championships in Poland, before being one of two final players cut from coach Chris Finch’s 12-man roster, a decision Finch hints he regrets:

“It was an extremely tough decision. Looking back on it, maybe we should have taken him for purposes of balance.”

Forbes had played little basketball in the 6 months before joining the Raiders on February 11th, due to a rare and serious condition affecting his heart, pericarditis, where inflammation of the pericardium (the fibrous sac surrounding the heart) occurs.
