FIBA Demand A Single Governing Body for London 2012 Spot

FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann wants a single overseeing body for basketbal in the UK

Patrick Baumann, the FIBA Secretary General has penned a letter to Basketball Scotland vice-chairman Bill McInnes demanding that a single governing body is formed to oversee basketball in England, Scotland and Wales as a pre-requisite for Great Britain getting their place at the London 2012 Olympic games.

In the letter seen by Scotland on Sunday, Baumann stated;

“There needs to be one boss, one organisation that leads, I don’t think that means the three federations as such need to disappear. They have their role, but it must be under one umbrella, with clearly defined responsibilities on developing basketball. We need to have one partner that has the clear vision so that when it comes to the table with FIBA or the British Olympic Association, they have the credibility to say what is good for basketball in England, Scotland and Wales.”

Scotland, England and Wales combined forces in 2005 to form a Great Britain national team after London secured the 2012 Olympics but each  retained their own identities as governing bodies.

The Scotland on Sunday went on to say that a senior British Basketball official has confirmed that detailed plans will be devised to satisfy FIBA before the vote on London 2012 takes place next March.

Thoughts?
