GB Win OT Thriller Over Macedonia

GB Standard Life Men v Macedonia - 8th August 2010

Luol Deng skies for two of his 23 points.

In what was one of the best games I have ever seen, Team GB took down Macedonia 104-96 in overtime yesterday at Northumbria University.

With Macedonia leading 83-76 with 2.35 remaining things were looking bleak for GB, but an 8-2 run sparked by 4 Deng points made it 1 point game with 48 seconds remaining leading to a Macedonia timeout. It was Andrew Sullivan who made a HUGE game changing block on Chekovski’s layup attempt that returned possession to GB. Deng came up short on a three and was forced to foul, leading to two more Macedonia points at the line.

With GB down by three, Pops Mensah-Bonsu was fouled on the inbound and sent to the line. He missed both, but Dan Clark tipped the rebound to Luol Deng standing on the three point line who drained a MASSIVE three pointer to send the game into OT with 6.1 seconds remaining. The place erupted.

In OT, the momentum had shifted and GB were too much as they closed out a 104-96 victory. Pops Mensah-Bonsu finished with 27 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks, whilst Luol Deng was an assist shy of a triple double with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists. Full box score available here, and picture gallery available here (some great ones!)

GB now stand 2-0 in their Eurobasket qualifiers, they will play Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday.
