England U16’s lost a heartbreaker to the Slovak Republic yesterday at the Division B FIBA European Championships after Simon Krajcovic hit a game-winning jumpshot with 9 seconds remaining to give them a 73-72 victory.

The loss means England will now be playing for a 9th place finish. Head Coach Simon Fisher was gutted after the loss;

“They were truly herculean in their desire to perform against a very good Slovakian team. I have won close games, lost others, but this one was one that can only be described as the hardest moment of my coaching career. I might be back, I could get other opportunities, but for the players who deserved the win, they don’t get that chance – that is why the result and sport is cruel.”

Josh Guddemi led all England scorers with 22 points, Elliot Sentance had his best performance of the tournament with 18, whilst Joshua Ward-Hibbert had 16. Full box score and play by play available here.

England will take on Sweden tomorrow.
