Around the NBL 16/17 – Week 4

Division One

Loughborough Student Riders (1-0) claimed victory over fellow D1 newcomers Team Solent Kestrels (0-1) as Levi Noel scored 17 points in the 90-78 success. Alex Roberts added 14 points along with six assists as the home side pulled away with a 23-14 second period.

Meanwhile, the defending champions, Manchester Magic (1-0) got off to a winning start with a 74-54 victory against Westminster Warriors (0-1), despite a 25-point haul from Jon J Johnson. The hosts were led by 13 points and 12 rebounds from Lee Goldsbrough with Hamad Ali netting 13 points off the bench.

Lyonell Gaines continued his strong start to the NBL season with 30 points, 16 boards and five assists, though he was unable to prevent Worthing Thunder (0-1) from falling to a 73-76 defeat at home to Leicester Warriors (1-0). Darrell Bethune top scored with 17 points for the visitors with Leome Francis adding a further 16 points.

Derby Trailblazers (1-0) held on for a nail-biting 83-82 victory over Bradford Dragons (0-1) with Josh Ward-Hibbert leading the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds. There was a near triple-double effort from Rema Lascelles as he finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, 10 assists and six steals in the win.

London Lituanica (1-0) were dominant in their opener despite only having five available players as they swept past Lancashire Spinners (0-1) 62-87 away from home. Mantas Adomaitis poured in 26 points with Ausridas Petraitis close behind on 25 points whilst adding 14 rebounds.

Manuel Pena Garces’ Reading Rockets (1-0) side were also victorious on their travels as they claimed a 79-98 win away at Hemel Storm (0-1). American duo Chris Hooper and Craig Ponder combined for 44 points in the victory as the Rockets raced out of the blocks for an 18-30 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

On Sunday, Team Northumbria (1-0) defeated Essex Leopards (0-1) 81-67 with Blayne Freckleton top scoring with 20 points in the win. Jack Preston and Lewis Champion added 17 points apiece as TN turned a narrow two-point lead at the half into a double-digit victory.


Division Two

Team Newcastle University (1-0) made a winning start to life in D2 as they defeated Liverpool (0-1) for the second week running with a 79-60 success. Meanwhile, Joseph Baugh netted 19 points to lead Derbyshire Arrows (1-0) past Doncaster Danum Eagles (0-1) 70-76 on the road, while Newham Neptunes (1-0) edged out London Westside (0-1) with a 75-74 victory.

Kent Crusaders (1-0) recorded a 100-85 victory at home to Tees Valley Mohawks (0-1) with the visitors led by 38 points from Charlton Jones, in defeat. John Shodipo top scored with 22 points for the Crusaders with Amin Adamu and Obi Agu adding 20 and 19 points respectively.

The final D2 game, on Sunday, saw London Greenhouse Pioneers (1-0) start their campaign with a 70-58 win at home to Nottingham Hoods (0-1) behind 19 points from C Piccini.


Division Three

In D3 North, Stoke-on-Trent Knights (2-0) – formerly Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights – defeated Sheffield Hallam Sharks (0-1) 62-71 on the road with Kieran Jones netting 26 points. Meanwhile, Myerscough College Spinners (2-1) suffered their first defeat with a 74-81 loss at home to Worcester Wolves II (2-0).

University of Chester (3-0) are still unbeaten as they recorded an 87-76 triumph over Charnwood Riders (0-1), despite 26 points from Johde Campbell. Mansfield Giants (1-1) defeated Sefton Stars (0-3) 87-71 and Coventry Tornadoes (0-2) were beaten 62-78 at home to Team Birmingham Elite (1-1).

Sussex Bears (3-0) made it three wins from three in D3 South after their leading trio combined for 77 points in a 91-99 success away at Oxford Brookes University (0-2) with Bud Johnston netting a game-high 27 points.

Middlesex LTBC (3-0) are also unbeaten after extending their winning start with an 85-58 victory against Cardiff Met Archers (2-1), while Northants Thunder (1-0) overcame London United (0-2), 77-69, and Greenwich Titans (1-3) recovered from a slow start to beat Thames Valley Cavaliers II (0-3) 88-59 with 30 points from Yassin Bouraidah.


Division Four

Tameside (3-0) continued their strong start in the North with an 88-50 win over Barrow Thorns (0-1) with four players in double figures, while Kingston Panthers (2-0) defeated Team Sunderland (0-1) 72-66.

In the Midlands, Dinais Tobi Lara poured in 34 points to guide Team Wolverhampton (2-0) to an 88-65 victory over Kings Lynn Fury (0-2), while Shropshire Warriors (1-0) defeated Warwickshire Hawks (2-1) 71-54 behind 26 points from Josh Crutchley.

Also, Sheffield Sabres (2-1) saw off Birmingham Mets II (0-2) 49-67 on the road, and Northants Taurus (2-0) edged out Derby Trailblazers II (1-1) 93-88 to maintain their unbeaten start.

Oaklands College (1-0) pulled off a 73-80 success away at Essex Blades (0-2) in the South East, while Barking Abbey (2-0) made it two wins from two with a 71-61 victory at home to Cambridge Cats (0-1). Also, Kent Crusaders II (1-0) defeated Middlesex Saxons (0-1) 67-60, and Chelmsford Lions (1-0) ran out convincing 88-62 winners over Anglia Ruskin University (0-2).

Finally, in the South West, Reading Rockets II (2-0) claimed a 79-75 win at home to Southampton University Sharks (0-1), while Cardiff City (1-0) defeated Exeter Eagles (0-2) 89-68 behind a combined 54 points from Patrick Likosso and Lewis Tucker. There was also a 91-67 win for RCT Gladiators (1-0) against Bristol Storm (0-1) with Phil Warren scoring 32 points.


National Cup

Liverpool completed the Second Round action with a 103-57 win at home to Sefton Stars.
