England U16s Beaten by France in Prep Tournament Opener

England under-16’s continue their preparations for the upcoming European Championships with a tournament in France over three days and they suffered an opening defeat against the hosts, on Friday.

Alan Keane’s side got off to a slow start and never recovered as France claimed a 75-57 victory.

Jacob Round shot 4-5 from beyond the arc on his way to a team-high 14 points, while Jacob Iwowo, who had six steals, and Kareem Queeley both also hit double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The opening quarter proved costly as France were able to open up a commanding 22-7 advantage at the end of the first.

The hosts extended their lead to 19 points at 41-22 heading into the half-time break before a 58-36 lead into the final quarter with the game seemingly already won.

England outscored their opponents in the fourth by 21-17 and they will look to bounce back when they take on Turkey later this afternoon (3pm UK tip), before finishing the tournament in Riom with a game against Poland tomorrow (1pm UK tip).

The U16 Euros begin in August in Lithuania, and England will again play Turkey with Germany and Russia also making up Group A.
