Ogo Adegboye Team GB Basketball

Ogo Adegboye has been a revelation for GB this year

Chris Finch announced the final 12 players who would be on the GB Senior Men’s team as they head into their Eurobasket 2011 qualifying games which tip off Monday night. It was bad news for Rob Yanders and top young prospect Ashley Hamilton as they both faced the cut.

Chris Finch is pleased with his selection and confident going into the games:

“We’re fit and ready to go for Monday. Our goal is to win the group and get through to Lithuania next summer. It’s going to be really difficult, but we feel we have a good chance to win the group and get to the finals again.”

Devon Bailey to start with, why take him over Ashley when you have a
team full of combo guards (Ogo, Justin, Flinder & Nate) he won’t see the floor which is exactly how he was used him during the warm up games! If your taking bodies which is what Devon has become you go with height no disrespect to Devon congrates to him but I’d have gone with Ashley.

Devon is definitely useful on the defensive end where GB will likely face bigger, more physical guards who will look to body Ogo (who has been the find of the Summer) so you can see Finch’s thinking with that. BUT we’ve overcompensated at the guard at the cost of depth on the wings and that could come back to bite us.

Justin can be a slightly bigger guard defender than Ogo. Plus Drew and Luol are versatile superior defenders who can get in and stop a bigger guard who starts to go off in any given game.

On the wings we have Luol and Drew with Dan Clark supporting in a more hybrid type role. We could have done with an athletic back up (like Nick George) who can slash, run and defend to spot those guys. Ashley would have been very useful.

I’m not even sure if Devon should have been the first on the chopping block if we were to take Ashley. For me, I ask why is Flinder Boyd still in? Nice guy, you could say he’s steady at the point – but with Ogo’s emergence, Justin and Nate as the older head, what do we need to use a valuable roster spot on him for? He’s not going to play next summer or after that and is only there to offer experience. I say with Nate in and the versatility of Luol and Drew – you don’t need what he brings at the cost of adding wing depth.

Alot of pressure on Pops with this team too. The young guys are the future, but we lack experience on the frontline outside of Pops. No choice this summer with Betts, Archibald and Freeland all out – but alot will fall onto Pops shoulders. He can handle it, but lets get behind the young guys and support them as their time is now!

Go GB

Is this squad fixed then? I thought they could change the 12 for each game. That’s why Finch asked Yanders to stick around, as he still might have got a game in the event of Nate getting injured. So Hamilton could still play yet.

Can someone tell me why Ryan Richards is not in any of the GB teams?
